Understanding Purified Water Types

The two primary categories of purified water are demineralized and distilled water. Each type has unique characteristics, making it suitable for different industrial uses:

Demineralized Water

Demineralized water is free or almost free of ionized impurities, such as cations (like calcium, sodium, magnesium) and anions (like chloride or sulfate). However, the processes used to produce it do not remove uncharged molecules, such as organic substances or bacteria.

It is produced through multiple purification techniques, which may include:

  • Reverse Osmosis : This process is based on the principle of a semi-permeable membrane. When two liquids of different concentrations are separated by this membrane, the less concentrated liquid passes through the membrane to mix with the other. By applying a pressure greater than the natural osmotic pressure, the water passes through the membrane in the opposite direction, leaving behind the dissolved solids, which purifies the water.

  • Electrodeionization:This technique combines reverse osmosis and ion exchange. Modules containing cationic and anionic resins are placed between selective membranes. Using an electric current, the ions captured by the resins are directed towards the membranes. This process, when coupled with reverse osmosis pre-filtration, makes it possible to achieve very high resistivity of demineralized water.

  • Membrane Filtration : Impurities are filtered out as water passes through specialized membranes.

Distilled Water

Produced by heating and condensing water vapor, distillation removes not only ionized impurities but also microorganisms, offering very high purity levels ideal for applications where bacteria-free water is critical.

Note: To prevent leaching, our glass bottles for HPLC-grade water and higher are DFE-coated.
